Autumn Beach Safety Reminders

12 Mar

With the start of autumn, our regional (paid) lifeguards — those who patrol during the week — have now finished for the season. Volunteer surf lifeguards will continue patrols on Saturdays and Sundays through to Easter weekend.

We know the warm water and sunny days will keep people heading to the beach — and with severe weather warnings still popping up from time to time, conditions can change quickly. Without weekday patrols to guide you to the safest spots, it’s important to take extra care.

Here are a few key tips to help keep you and your whānau safe:

FIND THE SAFEST PLACE TO SWIM

Check www.safeswim.org.nz  before you go for up‑to‑date water conditions and hazards.
If you’re at a lifeguarded beach, always swim between the red and yellow flags.

KNOW HOW TO FLOAT

If you can't float confidently, it’s safer not to go into the water. Floating helps you stay calm, keep your airway clear, and is the first step if you get caught in a rip.
Practice in a pool if you need to — it's a key survival skill.

IF IN DOUBT, STAY OUT

Waves can be bigger than they look, rips are hard to spot, and conditions can change quickly.

If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and stay out of the water.

TAKE CARE OF OTHERS

Keep children within arm’s reach in or near the water — conditions can change in seconds.

Look out for your mates too; everyone has different abilities.

KNOW HOW TO GET HELP

If someone is in trouble and lifeguards are on patrol, alert them immediately.
If no lifeguards are present, call 111 and ask for Police — they have a direct line to surf lifeguards and other responders.
If you’re the one in trouble, signal for help.

Stay safe, enjoy the sunshine, and look out for one another this autumn.
