Building Confidence & Connection

2 Jun

Recently, one of our junior lifeguards, Niamh Clark, had the opportunity to attend the Surf Life Saving Northern Region (SLSNR) Youth Development Camp (YDC) — and by all accounts, it was an unforgettable experience. The Youth Development Camp is designed for young lifeguards who show enthusiasm for surf club life. Rather than focusing on technical surf skills, the camp centres on personal growth, leadership, and stepping outside your comfort zone — all while building strong connections with other young people across the region.

A Camp to Remember

Held on Motutapu Island during the school holidays, the camp brought together young lifeguards from different clubs for a mix of leadership sessions and outdoor challenges. For Niamh, it was a chance to try new things and grow in confidence.

“A lot of it was out of my comfort zone – like the high ropes and Burma trail, but I would do it all again if I could.”

Like many camps, there were early starts, physical challenges, and plenty of team-based activities — but what stood out most was the sense of connection.

“I had an amazing time and met some amazing lifeguards who have become really good friends.”

Strong Connections, No Distractions

One of the most impactful parts of the experience was the opportunity to disconnect from technology and fully engage with others.

“I thought I would hate not having my phone… but it was really nice because we were forced to interact with each other.”

Without established friend groups, everyone arrived on equal footing — making it easier to connect, support each other, and build friendships quickly.

Growth Through Challenge

The camp is designed to push participants in a supportive environment — helping them discover what they’re capable of. For Niamh, that meant learning more about herself both on land and in the water.

“When it came to all the water activities, I realised I could hold my own even though I’m not a sporty athlete.”

Giving It a Go

Perhaps the most important takeaway from the experience is one that perfectly reflects the spirit of surf life saving:

“Give everything a go even if it scares you.”

Looking Ahead

We’re incredibly proud of Niamh for stepping up and making the most of this opportunity, and grateful to those who support our young members to attend opportunities like this.

“I would love to go back and be an instructor one day.”

Experiences like the Youth Development Camp play a huge role in building the confidence, leadership, and connections that carry through into our club — both on and off the beach.
