Lifeguards Are Back – Just In Time For A Hot Summer!

8 Nov

With forecasts predicting a scorcher of a season, our volunteer lifeguards are back on patrol to keep Pāpāmoa Beach safe. More sun = more swimmers = more responsibility — and our team is ready.

Last season saw minimal incidents thanks to proactive lifeguarding. This summer, we’re doubling down on prevention — but we need your help too.

BEACH SAFETY REMINDERS:

LEARN TO FLOAT - If you can’t float, don’t swim. Floating helps you stay calm, keep your airway clear, and survive if caught in a rip. Learn to float before heading to the beach.

SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS – check www.safeswim.org.nz  to find a lifeguarded beach, and always swim between the red and yellow flags, which show the safest place to swim.

IF IN DOUBT, STAY OUT - If in doubt, stay out. Waves and rips can be deceptive — don’t overestimate your ability or underestimate the ocean. When unsure, it’s always safer to stay on shore.

WATCH YOUR KIDS & YOUR MATES - Always keep kids within arm’s reach near water. Waves move fast and unpredictably. Watch your mates too — everyone has different abilities, and a little care goes a long way.

KNOW HOW TO GET HELP - If someone’s in trouble in the water, alert lifeguards immediately. No lifeguards? Call 111 and ask for police. If you’re in trouble yourself, signal for help. Every second counts.

Let’s make it a safe summer for everyone.
