Lifeguards in Training
Joining a weekend patrol with the volunteer lifeguards is one of the highlights of the season for our lifeguards in training – known as Rookies.
Our future lifeguards started their training last weekend with an introduction to self-preservation, learning how to be sun smart, how to avoid hypothermia and dehydration, along with an induction to the club.
With 23 Rookies this season, we are thrilled to see the interest in learning about surf lifesaving and a desire to provide service to the community. Some of the group are new to surf lifesaving and new to the Pāpāmoa club so it’s great to be building confidence in our younger members.
Our Rookies programme is free to join and is an educational programme that introduces children aged 13-14 to a higher level of lifeguarding skills such as first aid, CPR, communication (radio and other) and patrolling requirements. Ultimately, growing them into our lifeguards of the future, ensuring as a club we can continue to meet the demands of our core business in the community. Rookies do a season of training before taking their lifeguard award exam.
A huge THANK YOU to our Rookie’s sponsor Eves whose ongoing support makes this programme possible.
