Becoming an official is not as daunting as it might seem and it’s a great way to get a front row seat at your child’s surf sports event. Officials are required to complete a short online course followed by some hands on practical shadowing at local and regional events.
Official roles can include starting and finishing races, marshalling and refereeing races. You can start with level 1 and stay there if you wish, but there are opportunities for more senior officiating roles which can take you to national and even international events.

Each season we host various carnivals at the Pāpāmoa Surf Club, including the Junior Surf Carnival, the Pāpāmoa Carnival, and our own Club Champs. A lot of organising goes into each of these carnivals and they are all run by volunteers so the more people we can get on board, the better. Your help can be as little or as much as your time allows so please consider putting your hand up when possible. And don't worry, putting your hand up for one carnival doesn't committ you to them all!

An essential role for helping the coaches and kids during carnivals and events. You look after an age group of either boys or girls and it’s your job to get them to the line on time and to support, encourage and celebrate along the way.
You liaise with the head coach and make any changes as required or add in composite teams.
The role also involves ensuring the athletes have all the right gear for each race, e.g. swim caps, fins, goggles and boards.

At carnivals which take place away from home, we always need a group of strong and willing parents to help set up and pack down our gazebos along the beach, as well as help with board loading/unloading on the trailer.
At Pāpāmoa based carnivals, slightly more is required to help set up the beach for races, such as flags and sprints, as well as help running the races on the day.
