Our Rookies Junior Lifeguards Programme provides the vital bridge between Junior Surf and Senior Lifeguarding. It is an educational programme that introduces children aged 13-14 to a higher level of lifeguarding skills such as first aid, CPR, communication (radio and other) and patrolling requirements. Ultimately, growing them into our lifeguards of the future, ensuring as a club we can continue to meet the demands of our core business in the community.
Although there is a Rookies challenge at the end of the season (for Eastern Regional Clubs), the programme is not competitive and previous participation in Junior Surf activities is not required.
200m Safety Badge Testing
Bartlett’s Swim School
30th October and 20th November
2pm - 3pm
To complete the badge, participants must swim 200m in a pool unaided under 4mins 30secs.
If the swim competency test isn’t achieved, Rookies can still join but will be unable to take part in water-based activities.
Members of either Bartlett’s Swim School or the Pāpāmoa Swimming Club can ask their instructor to assess them and give them a certificate of completion. A scanned or photographed copy of this can be emailed to email@example.com
Please note that the 200m safety badge needs to be completed at the start of each season.
“Kia ora. My name is Andrew King and I have been a Lifeguard at Pāpāmoa Surf Life Saving Club since 2015, served on the Board for two years, and have supported Junior Surf and Rookies in the past, with my three children participating. I am a teacher by trade and am currently the Principal at Oropi School. I look forward to working with you and your son/daughter."
“Kia ora. My name is Marama Mateparae. Our whanau is new to surf lifesaving, joining Pāpāmoa Surf Life Saving Club last year, when I became a Lifeguard. My son, Sam, was a Rookie last year and is looking forward to becoming a lifeguard when he turns 14 next year. My daughter, Billie, will join Rookies next year. I’m looking forward to getting to know all the new Rookies and hope they’ll enjoy the programme.”
