Record Breaker, Resilience, and Family: An Interview with Richard Williams
We had the pleasure of catching up with Pāpāmoa clubbie Richard Williams, who has not only set New Zealand records, but has also returned to top form after back surgery last year. With inspiring determination and a love for the sport, Richard shared with us insights into his journey, challenges, and future goals.
We asked Richard how it feels to be a New Zealand Record holder. "There's something truly special about knowing you've pushed yourself to achieve a New Zealand record, especially at my age," says Richard. "It feels incredibly rewarding to have all that hard work recognised in such a meaningful way."
After undergoing back surgery last year, Richard had to face a tough road to recovery. The journey wasn’t easy, but the rewards have been undeniable. "The journey since surgery has definitely had its challenges, but it’s also been incredibly rewarding. There were moments of doubt and frustration, but I’ve learned to trust my body and be patient," Richard reflects. "It’s been a test of both mental and physical strength, but returning to training and competing after such a major surgery has made me appreciate every small victory even more."
One thing that kept Richard focused was the drive to compete again, particularly in Surf Life Saving events. "Each event felt like a step forward, pushing me to show up even when I didn’t feel like it. It’s strengthened my commitment to achieving my goals."
Richard reveals that competing at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships has been the highlight of the season so far. "It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and competing on that stage was a moment of pure joy and validation for all the hard work I’ve put in," Richard shares. The competition was especially memorable with record-setting performances, including both Australian and New Zealand records, and a few medals to take home. "Competing at such a high level and pushing my limits has been a thrill," he says, reflecting on the personal milestones achieved along the way.
When asked what keeps him motivated, Richard doesn’t hesitate. "My motivation comes from a desire to continually improve and push my boundaries. Every training session brings me one step closer to my next big goal," he explains. There’s also a strong sense of purpose behind it all: "I love what I do, and knowing I might inspire others along the way keeps me going, even on tough days. Plus, I’m definitely competitive and want to make myself, my family, and my friends proud."
Looking forward, Richard is excited about what lies ahead. "My main goals are to continue improving my performance and, if I’m fortunate, set even faster records and personal bests," he says. Though he missed out on the World Championships this year, competing internationally remains a big aspiration.
One aspect that has made this year particularly meaningful is training alongside his daughter, Chloe. "Having Chloe train and compete alongside me this year has been an incredible experience. This is her first year competing in Pool Rescue, and as a father, I’m thrilled to see her so passionate about the sport," Richard shares with pride. "Watching her progress and celebrate her successes makes me immensely proud, and having her watch me compete motivates me to push myself further."
Training together has strengthened their bond and added a new level of enjoyment to the journey. "It’s been wonderful to have something we both enjoy and work towards together, making this journey even more special."
With Richard continuing to push limits and set records, and Chloe finding her footing in the sport, the future looks bright for this dynamic duo.
